Working principle of Hydraulic torque converter

(1) Mechanical energy → kinetic energy process: the pump wheel is driven by the engine rotation, pushing the liquid to rotate around its axis along with the pump wheel, so that it obtains a certain speed (kinetic energy) and pressure. Its speed depends on the radius and speed of the pump wheel.

(2) kinetic energy → Mechanical energy process: the liquid is driven by kinetic energy into the turbine, which is used for a thrust of the blade, and the turbine rotates together, and the turbine obtains a certain torque (mechanical energy). The small amount of liquid kinetic energy is consumed in the high velocity flow and the frictional heat of the runner.

(3) The angular momentum change process: The Guide wheel fixed, the liquid flows through without the mechanical energy conversion, because the wheel blade shape change (import and export leaf area is unequal), the liquid flow velocity and the direction change, its angular momentum changes. The change of angular momentum depends on the change of leaf area.

The turbine rotational speed varies with the external load, and the direction and velocity of the liquid-flow impact blades change.
